Careful — you are not buying a model. You are buying a grade up set from Studio27: additional parts with which to improve a BMW Z4 GT3 kit in 1:24 scale from the maker Fujimi, whether already built or still under way. The basic kit is not in the package. The photo-etched parts are cut to the shapes of one particular kit, so they will not fit a kit from another maker, Tamiya for instance.
The BMW Z4 GT3 was a customer racing car — BMW supplied it to private teams all over the world and it started in dozens of colors and liveries in series run to GT3 rules, from endurance races to national championships. For the 2013 season the car was given a revised drivetrain and aerodynamics. That is exactly why the Z4 GT3 is such a rewarding subject: the same car, a different team and a different livery every time.
On a racing car detail cannot be hidden. Plastic cannot do a truly thin edge or a real mesh — a molded grille is only an engraving, a solid pancake. A real photo-etched mesh is thin and you can see through it, and on the Z4 GT3 there is a whole row of them in the front bumper and along the sides. The interior shows even more: a racing cabin is bare, so the seat belts are literally in plain sight. Photo-etched buckles and clasps together with the webbing look like a real belt — a plastic or missing substitute kills the impression of the whole model.
Studio27 makes a whole range of decal sheets with Z4 GT3 liveries. They go together splendidly: the photo-etched parts supply the detail, the decal sheet supplies the particular team and the colors. When you come to choose, reach for both.
Photo-etched sheet is bent (an etch bender comes in handy, a razor blade and tweezers at a pinch), it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue rather than plastic cement, and the original plastic detail often has to be sanded away — irreversibly. It is work for more experienced modelers, with a magnifier and patience.
A detail set, not a model. The basic kit, the decals, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
