1:24 Toyota 91CV – Grade Up Parts (for Hasegawa Kits) is a set of photo-etched metal parts from Studio27 for refining the Toyota 91C-V kit from Hasegawa. It is not a kit but an addition to a model you already have.
Responsibility details are not available.
Sets labeled Grade Up do one single thing in modeling: they take a plastic kit and give it detail that plastic physically cannot manage. This one is made of photo-etched metal, it is produced by the Japanese company Studio27 and it is intended for the Toyota 91C-V kit in 1:24 scale from Hasegawa. We stress it right at the start: there is no car model in the box. You have to own the basic kit.
Where is the difference visible? Molded plastic can only suggest a grille with an engraving – what is left is a pancake. A Group C prototype, meanwhile, is literally assembled out of intake openings and radiators, and they are exposed from the outside. A photo-etched mesh is thin and you can see through it, so a sense of depth arises at once. The same goes for the seat belts: photo-etched clasps with webbing look like a real belt, not like a sticker on a seat.
The Toyota 91C-V is a Group C endurance prototype of 1991 – from the era when the winner was decided not only by power but also by a fuel consumption limit: the driver had to save fuel and go flat out at the same time. The car was powered by a turbocharged V8 and was part of the Japanese offensive against the European stronghold of Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes.
And here let us be honest: the 91C-V won none of the great European classics. Toyota did not take an outright win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991, and the car raced mainly at home. Toyota waited decades for an overall victory at Le Mans and got it only in 2018. That is precisely what is interesting about the 91C-V: it is a car from the era when Toyota was still only dreaming. Everybody has models of winners at home — this one tells the story of the journey, not of the trophy.
Without embellishment: photo-etched parts are a discipline for the more experienced. The parts are bent (an etch bender is invaluable), they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue – plastic cement does not hold on metal – and some of the plastic details have to be sanded away, which is irreversible. Tweezers, a magnifier and a calm hand are compulsory equipment. The body of a prototype should be as glossy as a piano: clear varnish over the decals and polishing compound will do the rest. And for the wheels a masking template for the tire lettering of Group C cars comes in handy – without it four dull black pancakes remain.
This is an additional set, not a kit. The basic model, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
