This is neither a kit nor a photo-etched set. It is a decal sheet that is applied from the inside, to the inner face of the clear parts of the headlights and rear lights of the Subaru Impreza WRC plastic kit from Tamiya. You have to have the basic kit; this is an addition to it. It is made by the Japanese company Studio27.
A real headlight is not an empty transparent bubble. Inside it there is a reflector, a bulb, fluted glass, structure, an indicator and a fog lamp — layers that have depth and refract light. A kit gives you only a piece of clear plastic there. And it shows: the headlight looks like a dead eye, empty and flat. The rear lights are worse still. Real ones have a fine structure, separate chambers and different colors — brake, position, reversing. On a model all that is left is a red pancake.
And now the essential point: the lights are the first thing a person looks at on a car model. They are the face of the car. When they are dead, the whole model is dead — even if the paint is perfect. This sheet solves that in a few minutes: you apply the decal from the inside and the headlight suddenly has depth. The effect is unmissable.
The decal belongs on the inner face of the clear part — that is, on the side that then disappears inside the body. You have to get it there before you glue the clear part into the body. Anyone who leaves it too late will no longer reach the inside. The clear part must be perfectly clean and free of fingerprints beforehand: every trace of grease and every speck is emphasized under the decal and will be visible through the glass for good. Wash it in lukewarm water with detergent and hold it by the edges or in a glove.
To glue clear parts use glue meant for clear parts — ordinary modeling cement for plastic and cyanoacrylate glue both fog clear plastic and the headlight will go irreversibly dull. Polishing compound and clear varnish, which give a glass part its gloss back, also come in handy.
And one more thing: the Impreza comes inseparably with its greatest rival — the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Studio27 makes the same kind of inner-lens decals for it as well. Anyone who builds one sooner or later wants both in the cabinet.
Decals are not a kit. The basic model, the glue, the paints and the varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
