1:12 Yamaha YZR M1 2011 – Trans Kit (for Tamiya Kits) is a Studio27 conversion set that turns the basic Tamiya kit into the MotoGP motorcycle Yamaha YZR-M1 of the 2011 season. It is NOT a kit in its own right – you have to have the basic Tamiya kit in 1:12 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
A conversion set, a trans kit, from the Japanese maker Studio27 in 1:12 scale. It is NOT a kit in its own right and it is not a photo-etched set either. It is a set of parts that turns one version of a motorcycle into another – into the machine of one particular season. You have to have the basic Tamiya plastic kit; this set does not replace it. Conversion sets of this type usually hold resin parts – a different fairing, tank, exhausts or brakes –, together with photo-etched sheet and decals for the livery in question; the exact make-up of the particular set and its compatibility with your own kit are not stated here. The whole point of a trans kit: Tamiya releases one machine from one season, but a MotoGP prototype changes every year – a different fairing, different exhausts, different electronics, a different livery – and every rider has their own. A trans kit is the only way to a machine Tamiya has not released.
Beware of mixing them up: Studio27 also makes the Yamaha YZR M1 Monster set. That one deals with the livery of the sponsor Monster Energy, not with a different type of machine. This set is tied to the 2011 season.
The Yamaha YZR-M1 is a prototype of the premier MotoGP class – unlike the two-stroke 500s of the earlier era it is a modern four-stroke. In the 2011 season the Yamaha works team fielded the pair of Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies; in the same year the YZR-M1 was also ridden by a satellite team backed by Monster Energy. An important warning against a common error: Valentino Rossi did not ride for Yamaha in 2011 – he had moved to Ducati. If you are building Rossi's machine, you need a different subject and a different set.
The most important advice: wash the resin parts before painting – warm water, detergent and a brush. Mold release agent stays on them, and if it is not removed, the paint will not grip and will peel. It is the most common reason the whole job fails. Resin cannot be glued with cement for plastic – it needs cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers; try the parts dry and fit them together. Resin dust is harmful to health – sand wet and with a respirator. Reckon with the original plastic parts having to be cut or sanded away, and that step is irreversible. The fairing of a MotoGP machine is extremely curved, so without a decal softener a decal will not settle. Primer, sanding sponges and tweezers come in handy; a clear top coat pays off for the gloss of the fairing.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted and it is not a complete model. The basic Tamiya kit, the glue, the paints and the accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
