Don Cossacks in German service in the Second World War, 1:32 size. A set of unpainted figures with traditional cavalry accessories.
Responsibility details are not available.
After 1941 part of the Cossack population of the Don region joined the German army. The main motive was the memory of the civil war and of the economic breakdown of the 1930s, not sympathy for the occupier. Individual squadrons attached to infantry divisions were formed first from volunteers and prisoners, and in 1943 a whole cavalry division under the command of Helmuth von Pannwitz.
The division was deployed mainly in the Balkans against partisans, grew into a corps toward the end of the war and formally passed under a different command. In May 1945 the men surrendered to British units in Carinthia, and their subsequent handover to the Soviet side at Lienz ended tragically for most of them. The appearance combined the German field tunic with traditional elements: the fur papakha or the lower kubanka, the felt cloak called a burka and the saber, which these horsemen still carried at a time when it had long gone out of use elsewhere.
It is precisely those traditional accessories that make the set an interesting piece. Felt is painted differently from cloth; a rougher texture and a muted contrast without sharp transitions suit it. The papakha will stand warm brown tones with a hint of the individual hairs. In a scene it is worth adding horses, or at least harness and a saddle of matching size, otherwise the cavalry character of the unit is lost. The saber is best sanded down to a thinner profile, because a cast blade tends to be thicker than it should be at this size.
