Burgundian sergeants and archers of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, reduced to 1:72. A foot escort for a castle scene, a siege or a column on the road.

The Duchy of Burgundy stood between France and the empire as a power that could afford standing units. The sergeants formed the core of the foot component and the archers with longbows and crossbows covered their advance. It was precisely in the time of Charles the Bold that the ordinance companies arose with a fixed ratio of spearmen to missile troops, and that is the composition this set recalls. The equipment included pavises, helmets of the kettle hat type and a colored livery with the cross of St Andrew.
Medieval architecture tempts one to enlarge. A gate, a wall and a wagon always look smaller in a model than they really were, and the only reliable scale is a human silhouette placed at the foot of the wall. An archer with a drawn bow moreover shows the direction of the gaze, so it leads the viewer's eye where you need it, for example to the window of a tower or to a breached wall.
The figures are supplied unpainted and without terrain accessories.
Try leaning part of the detachment against a ladder and placing the rest in a semicircle below the wall. The differing height of their stance will then create the impression of a slope by itself, and the viewer will read off from the shoulders and heads how high the wall walk is above the ground.
