A foliage mat from the German maker HEKI measuring fourteen by twenty-eight centimeters. Compared with ordinary granulate, the covering has the shape of small leaves, so close up a crown does not read as grain but as foliage. The mat can be stretched out and shaped, which is the essential thing with this group of materials: a piece is first opened out into an irregular net and only then laid onto the framework of a tree. The light green shade matches fresh leaf and sets a scene in spring or the start of summer.
Tear a piece off and stretch it out to the sides until irregular gaps arise in it. It is precisely those that make a crown believable, because no tree is a continuous green ball. Lay the prepared piece onto the framework, press it down and fix it with drops of super glue or white glue. Dose the glue sparingly; on a fine leaf covering a soaked-through drop shows as a glossy patch. Let the tree dry hanging or stuck in place so that the crown is not flattened.
For builders of layouts and dioramas who finish their trees themselves, and for modelers who photograph their scenes close up. It is a modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its landscaping goods as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
