A foliage mat from the German maker HEKI measuring fourteen by twenty-eight centimeters. The covering in the shape of small leaves holds on a carrier net, so even a dark crown looks like foliage close up and not like a piece of colored foam. In a growth, dark green is the color of shadow: it gives a crown depth where a lighter shade would flatten the area, and that is why it is handled differently from a base green.
Tear a piece off, stretch it out into irregular gaps and lay it onto the framework. Fix it with sparing drops of super glue or white glue. Do not use the dark shade on a whole tree on its own, as the crown then merges into a single mass with no shape. Layer it: dark inside and below, lighter on the ends of the branches turned toward the light. On bushes and thickets the dark variant stands up on its own, because there the depth comes from the shape, not from the color.
