Scatter ballast of crushed natural stone in a gray granite shade. The box weighs half a kilogram and the grain size matches the usual layout gauge. The material is poured onto a cork or other bed under the track and fixed with thinned glue.
Ballast of crushed stone has sharp edges and an irregular shape, exactly like a real ballast bed. Lighter substitutes of foam or plastic look rounded close up and float when glue is flooded on. Stone also takes color and weathering just as the real subject does, so it can be toned according to whether the track is to look freshly tamped or clogged with dirt.
The set is for layout builders finishing off the permanent way and for diorama modelers with a railroad subject. The manufacturer is a German company specializing in scenery accessories, and production takes place in Germany. Safety note: this is a loose natural material and does not belong in the hands of children under three because of the risk of inhalation. Test the shade on a scrap before pouring, because dry and glued ballast look different: once the glue has dried the color usually darkens.
