About product

Wellington - airborne radar antennas 1:72 (Tiger Head Models)

A set of fine parts from the Tiger Head Models brand in 1:72 scale for models of the British twin-engine bomber Vickers Wellington. The package does not contain a model of the aircraft; it is the antenna array of an airborne search radar with which a finished model is given the equipment of machines sent out on patrol and night search.

The real subject

At the start of the Second World War the Wellington was the most numerous British medium bomber, and thanks to its roomy fuselage, decent endurance and tough geodetic structure it suited tasks it had not originally been designed for as well. Among them was the testing and fielding of the first airborne radars. The technology of the day could not yet hide an antenna under a fairing, so the dipoles and their supports stuck out of the nose and the leading edges, and the aircraft gained a characteristic bristling silhouette from them. For a modeler it is an ideal combination: a minimum of work, a maximum change of appearance. From a standard bomber kit it is thus possible to build a variant that usually nobody else has on the display table.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the antennas are extremely fine and will not take rough handling. Release them only at the moment of fitting, work with tweezers with fine jaws and over a light surface, so that you will find a part if it falls. Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water and apply a very thin primer, as a heavy layer would flood the detail. They are glued with super glue applied with a pin; try the position dry in advance, as once dry no correction is possible. Paint them in the shade of the surrounding covering and highlight the edges only lightly, otherwise the antennas will be lost at reduced size. Use almost no weathering here.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the Wellington in 1:72 scale looking for an unusual version
  • Modelers with an interest in early British airborne radars
  • Experienced builders used to very fine parts
  • Collectors of accessories for British Second World War bombers

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a supplementary set of antennas for a model of the Wellington in 1:72 scale that you build yourself.

Early airborne radars did not yet have their antennas hidden under a fairing. The dipoles and their supports therefore stood out of the nose and the leading edges.

Release them only just before fitting, use fine tweezers and apply the glue with a pin. Always try the position dry first.

In the shade of the surrounding covering and in a very thin layer only. A heavy coat would flood the fine detail and the antennas would lose their crispness.
