About product

Canopy masking set for the P-40E in 1:48 scale

The set contains die-cut masks of yellow kabuki tape intended for the canopy glazing of the American Curtiss P-40E fighter in 1:48 scale. The individual parts only need peeling off the sheet, laying on the relevant panes and the rest of the glazing covering over. That does away with the slow cutting of strips of tape or drawing the frames with a brush, which tends to be the commonest source of disappointment with an otherwise successful model.

Why a mask rather than a brush

Canopy frames are the first thing a viewer sees, and an uneven line shows even in a photograph. Kabuki tape holds its shape, follows slightly curved surfaces well and leaves no adhesive behind when removed. Paint does not creep under it as easily as under ordinary adhesive tape, so the edge stays sharp. Pre-cut parts also solve the awkwardly shaped places around the sliding section of the canopy, where masking by hand takes more time than the whole of the rest of the model.

How to use the mask

Degrease the glazing first and let it dry completely. Transfer the parts with tweezers and press them down with a wooden toothpick, above all around the edge, so that no border stands proud. Cover the free inner areas with a piece of tape or with masking fluid. Spray the interior color first, then the base and finally the outer camouflage; keep the coats thin so that no step forms at the edge. Remove the mask soon after the paint has dried, pulling at a shallow angle to the surface. Keep the rest of the sheet, as it comes in useful for masking wheels or small areas.

Who the set is for

  • builders of P-40 models in 1:48 scale who do not fancy masking the canopy by hand
  • modelers who want sharp, even frames with no touching up
  • anyone after saved time when finishing a model
  • beginners, for whom masking the canopy is the hardest part of the build

The set serves for masking during painting. It does not contain the model, paints or glue.

FAQ

It is not. This is only a masking set for painting. Get a kit in 1:48 scale separately.

Kabuki tape is made for this and leaves no adhesive residue behind when removed in good time. So do not leave the mask on the model needlessly long, and degrease the surface before applying it.

Shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at a shallow angle to the surface. Once the paint fully cures and bonds with the edge of the mask, a piece of the coat may come away with it.

Do not throw it away. The cut-out surround can be used for masking wheels, exhausts or small areas where no exact shape is needed.
