A printed Martin-Baker Mk.4 BRC ejection seat in 1:72 scale, intended according to the name for the Lightning and other aircraft. A replacement for the simplified part from a mold.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lightning was the first British aircraft capable of twice the speed of sound and to this day it looks like a machine from another planet of design. Its two Rolls-Royce Avon engines do not sit side by side but one above the other, the wing has a sweep of sixty degrees and the intake opening in the nose is filled by a cone with the radar. It served with Royal Air Force squadrons from 1960 and the last examples went into retirement in 1988. It left its mark on pilots above all by its steep climb; after takeoff it could go upwards at a rate the machines of the day did not know.
Saving a pilot from such a fast aircraft called for a seat with propulsion of its own and with a shape that would hold the crew against an enormous blast of air. The Mk.4 BRC version belongs to the family that Martin-Baker supplied precisely for the Lightning, and it also appears in the cockpits of several other types, which the name suggests by its mention of other aircraft.
The cockpit of the Lightning is clearly visible under its large glazing and a plastic seat from a mold looks there like an angular block. A printed replacement will supply a convex shell, distinct straps, the handle above the head and the small fittings on the sides. Before painting, level the pad left by the support, spray a dark base coat and pull the edges out with a dry brush. Seat the part in the fuselage before the halves are glued.
Anyone building a machine with the canopy slid back will appreciate one more small thing: thin strips of foil can be glued under the edge of the shell as loosened seat belts. The view into the cockpit thereby gains a depth that painting alone will not supply.
