The real subject

An empty drum does not stay straight for long. It gets thrown off a truck bed, rolled along the ground, left standing in water, and ends up dented on a heap by the workshop or dumped in a ditch. That is exactly how it looks better on a diorama than a new one: a neat row of clean drums reads like a shop display, whereas a few crumpled pieces give the scene the feel of a place where work was really done.

Building and painting tips

• choose the glue according to the material stated on the box, and clean and degrease the faces before joining them
• cut off surplus material and traces of production with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest down
• bring out the dented areas with a darker wash and, in contrast, go over the edges with a dry brush
• run the rust where water flows down, that is, from the lid downwards and around the hoops
• scatter the drums irregularly; a few pieces lying on their side and one propped up looks more convincing than a neat row
