Issue 13 of The Weathering Magazine from AMMO, devoted to the desert environment and its marks on vehicles. A publication, not modeling material.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Weathering Magazine is published by AMMO of Mig Jimenez, and every issue is built around one theme which it takes apart from several sides. The thirteenth issue is focused on the desert, that is on the environment where equipment does not rust but instead drowns in dust, fades in the sun and is abraded by sand.
The center of gravity of publications like this lies in the step-by-step demonstrations, where the procedure can be seen from the base color to the final application. That is precisely what is most valuable about weathering: not instructions for one model, but an understanding of the order in which the layers go and of when to stop. The desert theme moreover teaches things that find no use elsewhere, above all working with light reflected from the ground and with faded color, which differs noticeably from the factory original.
Settle the dust from the bottom upward and let it weaken on the vertical surfaces. Avoid an even powdering; it is irregularity that makes it believable. Choose the shade of the earth lighter than seems right, because it will darken once it dries. Fix loose pigments at the end, otherwise they rub off on fingers and on the packaging. Light dust on a dark base stands out more than you expect, so add it a little at a time and keep looking at the model from a distance, not only from close up over the table.
For a modeler who builds vehicles into a parched environment and wants to work to a procedure rather than by guesswork. This is a printed publication; paints, pigments, tools and a model are not part of its contents, unless stated otherwise.
