About product

Honda RA273 1:12 - an injection-molded Tamiya kit with photo-etched parts

The flagship large-scale kit of the Honda RA273 Formula One car in 1:12 scale from the company Tamiya, in the edition with photo-etched parts. The model builds on what makes large scales unique: a detailed twelve-cylinder engine with fuel lines and ignition wiring, twelve turned aluminum intake trumpets, fully movable front and rear suspension with metal coil springs and working steering - turning the wheel steers the front wheels. A removable nose cover reveals the radiator and the water tank even once the model is built. The photo-etched parts cover the brake discs, the oil cooler and the steering wheel spokes. Metal transfers for the manufacturer's emblems, the mirror surfaces and the instrument panel are included, as are hollow rubber tires with a faithful tread pattern, a driver figure and three marking options. The dimensions of the finished model are 333x143x70 mm.

The real subject

The Honda RA273 was the Japanese marque's answer to the change in the Formula One rules for 1966, when the permitted engine capacity rose from 1.5 to 3 liters. The car was built around a light monocoque frame with aluminum panels and was powered by a 90-degree V12 - an exceptionally powerful but also heavy unit. Richie Ginther and John Surtees took turns at the wheel of the RA273 during the season. The car represents the era when Formula One machines were still slender, without downforce wings and with the engine literally on show - which is exactly why it suits a large scale.

Building and painting tips

The sequence is the reverse of an aircraft: the engine and the suspension first, the bodywork last. Give time to the twelve-cylinder and to the ignition wiring, because it is the main scene of the model. Degrease the metal and photo-etched parts, bond them with super glue and lay down a primer before painting - paint does not hold on bare metal or on a photo-etched part. Spray the body with an airbrush in thin coats and finish it with gloss varnish; large smooth surfaces will show every unevenness, so sand the base carefully. Leave the chrome and mirror surfaces until the end. Apply the sponsor and emblem decals over a gloss base, press them down with a decal softener so that they follow the shape, and overspray them with a clear coat. Do not bond the rubber tires with ordinary cement for plastic - it does not hold.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers and collectors of historic Formula One cars
  • Fans of Honda and of the era of three-liter engines of the 1960s
  • Modelers who want to display an exposed twelve-cylinder engine and suspension
  • Those who will appreciate photo-etched parts, turned metal parts and metal transfers in the package

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A Formula One car of the mid-1960s. It came about as Honda's response to the change in the rules for 1966, when engine capacity rose from 1.5 to 3 liters. It had a monocoque frame with aluminum panels and a V12 engine; Richie Ginther and John Surtees drove it.

A large scale allows an exposed and fully detailed engine and suspension. The model has movable front and rear suspension with metal springs, working steering and a removable nose cover under which the radiator can be seen.

Yes. The kit contains photo-etched parts (the brake discs, the oil cooler, the steering wheel spokes), turned aluminum intake trumpets, metal coil springs and metal transfers for the emblems and the instrument panel.

Rather not. It is an extensive kit with metal and photo-etched parts, demanding painting and large gloss surfaces. It is recommended for modelers who already have experience with an airbrush and with painting bodywork.
