Mountain units are among the most recognizable components of the Italian army, and in the 120 mm scale they get the room they deserve. This polyurethane resin casting from Royal Model puts in the foreground what sets the Alpini apart from ordinary infantry: the hat with its rising feather, heavier mountain kit and sturdy footwear meant for rocks and snow.
The Alpini corps was created as early as the 1870s as the very first specialized mountain infantry in the world, and its members were recruited from the Alpine valleys whose names the units carried. The recognition mark remained the felt cappello alpino with a black feather at the side, a plain bird's feather that the soldiers valued highly. During the Second World War the Alpini fought in the Alps, in the Balkans and most harshly on the Eastern Front, where they suffered catastrophic losses during the winter retreat.
Wash the remains of mold release agent off and level the casting blocks under the soles, so that the figure stands straight. Cyanoacrylate is the only glue that reliably works here. Paint the hat separately: the feather has to stand out from it optically, and if you draw it on only after the hat is in place it usually turns out badly. On the coarser wool of a mountain uniform a dry brush works better than fine layering, because it emphasizes the texture of the fabric.
Supplied without paints, primer and glue; the modeler chooses all of it according to their own practice.
