A large plastic kit of the American M3 half-track personnel carrier of the Second World War in the attractive large scale of 1:16 from Andy's Hobby HQ. It is a premium model in a 2-in-1 release: from one box you build either the basic M3 version or the later M3A1. The large scale means a richly broken-up model with a great deal of detail.
The model combines injection-molded plastic with additional parts. According to the manufacturer data it does not lack a well-worked engine compartment, a detailed fighting compartment with interior fittings, armament in the form of .30 and .50 caliber machine guns, a driver figure, clear parts and photo-etched extras. The front wheels are made steerable, so the model can be turned into a dynamic pose. The exact number of parts and marking options is given in the contents of the particular box.
A half-track vehicle combines a steerable front axle on wheels with tracked running gear at the rear. The tracks on this type tend to be done as complete track runs: before gluing, check how they are assembled and how they fit over the rollers. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, sand the joints over and fill any gaps. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The open fighting compartment calls for careful painting of the interior before the hull is closed up.
Apply a primer before painting, then spray with an airbrush. On military vehicles wear is desirable: oil and water-based washes bring out the rivets and panel lines, pigments create dust and mud on the tracks and fenders, and a dry brush suggests worn paint.
