An injection-molded plastic kit of a tractor unit in 1:24 scale from Italeri. The subject is a Mack Superliner in Australian specification, specifically the custom-rebuilt machine Black Thunder in a gloss black finish, with modifications to the drivetrain and the exhaust system. The package contains plastic parts, chrome-plated parts, rubber tires, a new sheet of waterslide decals and instructions for assembly and painting. The finished model is 34 cm long; allow for that, because a truck in 1:24 is a large model that takes up a lot of room in a display case. The manufacturer rates it among the more demanding kits for experienced modelers.
Australian long-haul tractors are a category of their own. They run with so-called road trains, rigs of several trailers, tens of meters long, across the empty outback, where there are hundreds of kilometers of nothing between stops. Their appearance follows from that: massive cooling for the heat and the long climbs with enormous weight, bull bars protecting the front end in a collision with a kangaroo or with cattle, extra tanks, powerful auxiliary lights and a rugged chassis. The trucks tend to be the pride of their drivers and owners, who dress them with chrome, paint and graphics, and that is the road to the show trucks, among which Black Thunder belongs.
Trucks in 1:24 are a discipline of their own at Italeri: large models with a great deal of chrome, often built as show trucks with the emphasis on gloss. Let your method follow from that: the body and the cab have to be smooth, because a black gloss finish reveals every unevenness. Sand, fill with filler and spray with an airbrush in thin coats; after the decals, go over it with a clear coat and polish it with polishing compound. Do not touch the chrome-plated parts with bare fingers and cut them off carefully; damaged chrome is not easily hidden. It is practical to build and paint the frame and the chassis before you seat the cab on it. Anyone who wants a realistic working look can add a fine layer of dust to the chassis and the tanks, but leave the cab and the chrome glossy; the contrast is exactly what makes an Australian tractor come alive.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. A trailer is not part of the package.
