A set of plastic figures in 1:32 scale, the so-called fifty-four millimeter size, from HäT. The box holds sixteen figures in four poses and a figure base for each one. Assembly calls for a minimum of work and the figures are unpainted. The larger scale leaves room for careful painting of the faces and of the colorful Zouave uniform.
The Zouave regiments were among the most conspicuous units of the American Civil War. Their dress came from the French colonial troops in North Africa: a short vest, wide trousers, a sash and a fez or turban. The uniform was popular with volunteer regiments on both sides, and some of them kept it even after it had proved impractical and expensive in the field.
Wash the figures, dry them and spray them with a flexible primer. The 1:32 scale takes detail that would be lost in a smaller size, so it is worth picking out the eyes, the buttons and the embroidery on the vest. Mix the red trousers toward brick; pure red looks artificial even in a larger scale. Keep the sash and the gaiters lighter, and the contrast will pull the whole figure together.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
