A flagship injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from HK Models. It is one of the largest series-produced plastic aircraft models ever: the finished model has a span of roughly 97 cm and a length of approximately 66 cm, and the set contains more than 800 parts. Besides the aircraft itself, the package includes the Grand Slam bomb and parts for the modified, open bomb bay - and it is precisely this that makes this boxing the specific B Mk.I Special version rather than an ordinary Lancaster. The kit has carefully worked engines, landing gear bays and a nose section with the pilot's compartment and the radio station, and a photo-etched sheet is enclosed as well. The model is enormous, so allow for plenty of room in a display case.
The Lancaster was a British four-engined heavy bomber with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, committed to the night bombing offensive of the Second World War. The B Mk.I Special version came about by modifying several dozen aircraft for a single weapon, the Grand Slam bomb weighing 22000 pounds (over 9 tons), the largest conventional bomb of the Second World War. It was an earthquake bomb: it was not aimed directly at the target but was meant to penetrate deep into the ground beside it and to undermine the foundations of bridges, viaducts and concrete bunkers by the shock. The bomb did not fit inside the fuselage, so the aircraft flew with an open bomb bay, were lightened on account of the weight by removing the gun turrets, and were given strengthened landing gear. They were committed at the close of the war in Europe.
Plan the build in subassemblies: finish and paint the interior, the engine nacelles and the landing gear before you close the fuselage and the wings up. On the large parts use thin cement for plastic that draws in by capillary action, glue them in sections and keep checking that they are true; then sand the joints down thoroughly. Do not forget the primer, because without it scratches are harder to spot on large surfaces and paint holds on them less well. It is best painted with an airbrush in matte shades; a large surface invites color modulation, panel lines and fine exhaust staining behind the engines. Paint the Grand Slam bomb separately and fit it only at the very end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
