A large-format model of the German three-engine flying boat Bv 138 of the Second World War. In 1:32 scale it reaches a span of over eighty centimeters, so this is a build for long winter evenings and a display case you need to measure beforehand.
Responsibility details are not available.
The three-engine Bv 138 came about as a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft and among the crews it earned a nickname taken from its shape, because the short tub-like hull and the pair of booms carrying the tail surfaces gave it the silhouette of a wooden clog. Kriegsmarine naval aviation used it to patrol over the Arctic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay, to shadow the Allied convoys heading for Murmansk, and it could stay airborne for hours on end. The machine could land on the open sea, refuel from a submarine and carry on, which made it one of the most unusual designs of its day.
The real span of just under twenty-seven meters translates at a reduction of 1:32 into roughly eighty-four centimeters, while the length of the hull works out at sixty-two. This scale moves the build into another category. Rivets and panel joints stop being merely suggested and become real relief, the cockpit has room for an instrument panel with readable dials, and the float at the wing tip is by itself bigger than a finished model of a fighter in 1:72.
A build of this size wants a plan. The large parts have to be checked against one another dry before gluing, the joints take reinforcing, and the finished model needs a solid base, because its weight is no longer negligible. Painting is done in sections, and a single-color coat on the upper surface uses up markedly more material than modelers of smaller scales are used to.
This is an item for experienced builders looking for the centerpiece of a collection, not a weekend project.
