The thermally protected version of the GBU-10 Paveway I bombs, two pieces in 1:32 scale. Printed parts from Reskit for American carrier-based and land-based carriers.
Responsibility details are not available.
Thermal protection of the casing was brought in on aircraft ordnance so that a weapon would not explode in a fire on deck or in a store before there was time to move it away. Outwardly it shows up in a different surface texture and in different markings. Two printed pieces capture exactly this form of the first generation of the laser-guided bomb. The tail and the forward group are glued on separately.
The protective layer mattered most where aircraft stand close together and a firefighting response takes longer, that is on ships. In time it appeared with land units as well, because it simplified storage. A weapon with this modification was carried on the same machines as the version without the protection, only in a later period. The difference between the renditions is therefore not cosmetic but follows from the rules for storing and handling ordnance.
The difference from the ordinary rendition is brought out by a more matte clear coat and a finely grained texture, which can be suggested by lightly dusted coverage from a greater distance. Avoid pronounced polishing; a smooth surface would deny the protective layer. Level the tail and the forward group into one plane. The markings tend to be different on protected rounds, which is visible in photographs from the deck as well.
The package holds a pair of bombs with no accessories. Neither a kit nor chemicals belong with them; the weapon is hung on a finished carrier.
