About product

Hawker Hurricane Mk.IV/V 1:32 — FLY

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from FLY, a Czech producer specializing in short-run kits of large scales, commonly complemented by resin and photo-etched parts. That is essential information for a decision: short-run technology means a softer fit, fewer locating pins and the need for filling and sanding. The reward is a subject that mainstream manufacturers do not do, and this boxing is a textbook example. The Hurricane Mk.IV/V is not a Battle of Britain fighter, but a late ground-attack version.

The real subject

The Hawker Hurricane was the backbone of British Fighter Command in 1940 — it shot down more enemy aircraft in the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire and a number of Czechoslovak pilots in the RAF flew it. Structurally it came from an older school: a tube-frame fuselage with partly fabric covering, which made the aircraft easy to repair under field conditions. The Mk.IV was the last major development stage: it received the universal wing, which made it possible to carry, depending on the task, two 40 mm Vickers S anti-tank cannon in underwing gondolas, unguided rockets or bombs, alongside the fixed armament of .303 caliber machine guns. The Hurricane thus became a tank destroyer and a ground-attack aircraft. The Mk.V was a further development branch that never reached large-scale production.

Building and painting tips

Count on extra work: test-fit the parts dry first, fill and sand the gaps over, and help yourself with your own pins from wire or profile where locating pins are missing. Glue with thin cement for plastic, and the resin and photo-etched parts with super glue. Spray a primer before painting; it reveals imperfections. Do not overdo the fabric surfaces of the fuselage: the base is ribbed, not dented. Leave the underwing cannon and the rockets for the end, so that they are not in the way during masking; spray the camouflage with an airbrush and apply the decals over gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers who do not mind filling and sanding a short-run kit
  • Fans of the RAF and of the Czechoslovak aviation theme
  • Collectors of unusual versions — the ground-attack Hurricane with anti-tank cannon or rockets
  • Builders in large scales who want a striking piece for a display case

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Mk.IV was the ground-attack version with what was called the universal wing. That made it possible to carry, depending on the task, two 40 mm Vickers S anti-tank cannon in underwing gondolas, unguided rockets or bombs. It is therefore not a Battle of Britain fighter, but a late destroyer of ground targets.

Short-run is a limited production technology used by smaller manufacturers. The tooling tends to be softer, the parts coarser, locating pins are missing and the fit is looser. In practice it means more dry test-fitting, filling and sanding than on a mainstream kit, which is why the kit is recommended for more experienced modelers.

It is not recommended. The combination of a large scale and a short-run tooling makes demands on patience and on experience with filling and reworking parts.

A number of Czechoslovak pilots served on Hurricanes in the ranks of the RAF, and the aircraft shot down more enemy machines in the Battle of Britain than the Spitfire. The model therefore has a strong historical context.
