Two LAU-33 launcher pods for five-inch unguided Zuni rockets. A resin accessory in 1:32 scale for American carrier-based and attack machines.
Responsibility details are not available.
The unguided Zuni rocket of 127 mm caliber was the US Navy's answer to the limits of the older five-inch HVAR from the Second World War. It entered service in the second half of the 1950s, had a markedly greater range and effect, and thanks to its modular construction it could be fitted with several types of warhead, from high explosive through shaped charge to marking. In the armament of carrier aviation and the Marine Corps it then lasted for decades.
The rockets were not hung individually but in launcher pods. The LAU-33 is one of the smaller ones: it carries a pair of rounds, so it is slimmer and shorter than the widespread four-tube type, and it suits places where pylons are few or where room has to be left for other stores. Among others it was carried by the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, the Vought F-8 Crusader and the Vought A-7 Corsair II.
The set brings two complete pods. The mouths of the tubes are captured together with their leading edges, as are the breakdown of the casing and the upper mounting section. The castings are thin-walled yet stiff enough not to sag on the pylon under their own weight.
Cut the sprue gates with a fine-tooth saw, not with nippers: resin likes to chip at a thin spot. Then level the cut with a file and polish the surface so it does not show under the varnish.
