Paint masks for the special finish of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II in 1:32 scale, cut for the Trumpeter kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-35B Lightning II is the version of the American fifth generation combat aircraft intended for short takeoff and vertical landing. Behind the cockpit it has a lift fan and the main nozzle swivels downward, so the machine can set down even where there is no full runway. It was precisely this version that the US Marine Corps introduced. The rounded edges of the fuselage, the internal weapons bays and the smoothly fitted covers are clearly visible on a model in a large scale, and that is why every inaccuracy in the finish shows on them too.
The masks cover the areas of a special finish that carries the designation of the VMFA-242 unit with the nickname Bats. It is a strikingly conceived finish of a single machine, of the kind used for demonstration displays. The cut derives from the shapes of the Trumpeter kit in 1:32 scale; the exact layout and the order of the shades are described in the manufacturer's instructions.
With a multicolor finish the order decides. Start with the lighter shades, let them cure and only then stick the masks on for the darker areas. Run a toothpick along the edges of the masks so that they seat, and apply the paint in thin coats; one heavy coat bleeds sooner than three light ones. Take the masks off shortly after spraying and at an angle to the rear, not perpendicular to the surface.
The set will be appreciated by modelers who want to spray a complex finish and avoid assembling large decals on curved surfaces. The package contains the masks; the paints, the glue and the kit are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
