An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb fighter in 1:32 scale from Hobby Boss. The set offers finely engraved panel lines with riveting, clear parts and a photo-etched fret for part of the cockpit equipment (among other things the belts and the armor plate) and for the radiator grille. The fit of the parts is rated as very good and the model can be built straight from the box without trouble.
Let us be honest about the weaknesses of the mold as well: reviewers have long pointed out the overly rounded fuselage spine, the horizontal tail surfaces rendered as fabric covered and the small bulges on the upper wing skin above the wheel wells. It is a kit with an excellent surface finish rather than a record holder in outline accuracy. Anyone looking for maximum fidelity of shape may consider the more modern Spitfire Mk.I in 1:32 from Kotare — but that is a different version of the aircraft, not a direct alternative to the Mk.Vb.
The Mk.V was the most numerous version of the Spitfire — it came about as a quick answer to the new German fighters by combining the older airframe with the stronger Merlin 45 engine. The letter b does not denote a sub-version of the airframe, but the type of wing: the B wing carried two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns, while the older A wing had only eight machine guns. It was the cannons that gave the Spitfire its punch against tougher targets. The subject also has a strong Czechoslovak thread: a large number of Czechoslovak pilots served with the RAF, among others in No. 310, No. 312 and No. 313 Squadrons, which flew Spitfires.
Glue with liquid cement for plastic and use cyanoacrylate for the photo-etched parts and the belts. In 1:32 every detail shows — and unfortunately so does every rivet sanded away, so sand the joints carefully and restore the engraving where needed. The typical British camouflage (a two-color upper surface and a light underside) is best done with an airbrush and a soft transition; apply a gloss coat before the decals and a matte coat after them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
