An injection-molded plastic kit of the Su-25 Frogfoot A in 1:32 scale from Trumpeter. It is one of the most extensive kits of its kind: the box holds almost 900 parts on dozens of sprues, several clear sprues, photo-etched parts, a metal landing gear and rubber tires. The model lets you show what usually stays hidden: both R-195 engines together with the intake ducts, the openable avionics bays in the nose with removable panels, the gun armament with its access doors and the ejection seat with a photo-etched harness. The control surfaces can be set deflected and the canopy open. A generous supply of external stores comes with the ten underwing pylons, from bombs and rocket pods to guided missiles and drop tanks, so some of the parts will be left over as spares.
The Su-25 is a Soviet ground-attack aircraft for the close support of ground troops, a role that matches the American A-10. It is designed to survive over the battlefield: a heavily armored cockpit, widely separated engines, protected fuel tanks and redundant controls. It flies low and slow, carries a heavy load of weapons and is famous for shrugging off hits. It saw combat in Afghanistan, where it earned a reputation as a workhorse that comes home even when badly damaged. The A version is the basic single-seat combat variant; the two-seat trainer and specialized versions carry different designations and a different silhouette.
Build the kit in subassemblies: finish and paint the engines and the avionics bays before you close the fuselage, because after that you cannot reach them. Dry-fit the nacelles, and large surfaces are best clamped with rubber bands. Glue with thin capillary cement for plastic. Plan the stores in advance so that the load and the symmetry stay realistic. Spray with an airbrush over a filler primer; the typical three-color Soviet camouflage of the Su-25 takes panel preshading well. A ground-attack aircraft can carry, and positively asks for, honest weathering: soot streaks from the gun and the rocket pods, dust and oil on the belly, and paint worn away around the steps and access panels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
