An injection-molded plastic kit of the two-seat TF-104G Starfighter in 1:32 scale from Italeri. The kit comes from Italeri own modern tooling for the Starfighter in this scale, so it is a relatively new mold with finely engraved panel lines and suggested riveting, not an old reboxed tool. In extent it is roughly 390 parts, several dozen of them photo-etched. The kit offers unusually generous display options: a detailed J79 engine that can be fitted inside the fuselage or shown on its own (the rear fuselage can be separated), avionics bays that can be opened, the cockpit open or closed, flaps and slats extended or retracted, airbrakes open or closed, and a choice of two types of ejection seat with photo-etched harnesses. Two large decal sheets cover eight color schemes of machines from several air forces, including extensive technical lettering for the airframe.
The F-104 Starfighter is a jet machine of the late 1950s that you recognize at first glance by its extremely thin, short and straight wing — the edges were so sharp that they were covered with guards on the ground. Hence nicknames of the kind a manned missile. It was very fast and climbed like few others, but the small wing area made it a machine that was demanding to fly, above all on the approach and landing. In Europe the F-104G spread as a multi-role aircraft (Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and others) and its high accident rate, especially in the Luftwaffe, is still discussed today; the demanding low-level regime, training and the intensity of operations all played their part. The TF-104G version is the two-seat trainer variant with the seats in tandem, fully combat capable; it was on this one that Starfighter pilots learned to get along with its character.
Decide in advance whether you want the engine inside or on display, because that determines the sequence as well as the order of painting. Finish the interior of the long two-seat cockpit and the avionics bays before closing the fuselage. Clean the parts carefully and sand the seams over, as in 1:32 every imperfection shows. After sanding, sharpen the thin wing and the sharp leading edges again, so that they keep the character of the real thing. Most Starfighters flew in polished natural metal or in European camouflage; with metal it pays to have a flawlessly smoothed base, a gloss black primer and metal lacquers applied at the end, because they are hard to mask and to overspray.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
