An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The subject is the 2S23 Nona-SVK, a wheeled fire support vehicle that came about by moving the weapon from the tracked Nona system onto a substantially reworked chassis of the amphibious BTR-80 armored personnel carrier. The kit is richly equipped: it contains over 550 parts on nineteen sprues, a photo-etched fret, clear parts, brass wire, a decal sheet, eight rubber tires and one-piece upper and lower hull sections, which makes assembly easier and improves the accuracy of the shapes.
The Nona-SVK is a wheeled fire support vehicle on an 8x8 chassis. Its main weapon is the combined 120 mm gun-mortar taken over from the tracked variant of the same system. The vehicle is operated by four crew members, it is powered by a water-cooled eight-cylinder engine and it has a central tire inflation system, which lets it move over difficult terrain. Armor protects the front and rear of the hull, and the equipment includes night vision devices and thermal imaging. The BTR-80 chassis gives the vehicle amphibious capability and high mobility on the road.
The one-piece hull simplifies the build, but that makes a careful dry test of the wheel mountings and the running boards all the more important. Work out and paint the running gear and the inside of the turret before you close the assembly up. Wash and degrease the rubber tires before painting and use a base coat, otherwise the paint will not hold on rubber; the alternative is to leave them in their natural shade and only weather them with dust pigments. Use the brass wire from the box for the cabling and the brackets. After the base coat, apply a gloss coat under the decals, then bring out the panel lines with a dark wash and finish the underside of the vehicle with pigments that suggest dust and mud.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
