About product

AH-64 Apache - M230 chain gun, 1:35, Reskit

This set is NOT a helicopter kit - it is a 3D-printed replacement part from the Ukrainian brand Reskit, intended for a plastic model of the AH-64 Apache in 1:35 scale. It replaces the M230 gun slung under the nose of the aircraft. Specifically it is the variant in the parked position - the way the gun looks on a helicopter parked on the ground - and it is shaped for the kit from Meng. Fitting will be needed for another kit.

What a chain gun is and why it is interesting

The M230 is a 30 mm cannon whose action is not driven by the energy of the shot but by an electric motor through a chain - much the way a chain drives a bicycle wheel. Two things follow from this, and they are what made the M230 famous: it is exceptionally reliable (a faulty round does not stop the mechanism - the chain simply ejects it and carries on) and the rate of fire can be controlled, because it is set by the motor rather than by the ammunition. On the Apache the gun is slung under the nose on a movable mount and is linked to the gunner's helmet-mounted sight: wherever the gunner looks, the gun turns. That is exactly why it is worth doing properly on a model.

Why reach for an aftermarket part

The gun sits in the most exposed place on the whole model - under the nose, right at the viewer's eye level. The injection-molded plastic in a kit tends to be thick-walled, the barrel is blanked off and the fine detail of the mount is only suggested. 3D printing can give you a thin barrel with a genuinely drilled muzzle and crisp definition of the mount that a mold cannot deliver.

Building and painting tips

The material is resin, so ordinary cement for polystyrene does not work - bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate) or with epoxy. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent before painting so that any print resin residue disappears; otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the print supports off with a saw or a sharp knife, never break them off. Sand wet - resin dust is harmful and should not be inhaled. The barrel is thin and breaks easily, so glue it on right at the end of the build, after painting and weathering.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of the AH-64 Apache in 1:35 who want a faithful nose
  • Modelers who are bothered by the blanked-off barrel from a kit
  • Diorama builders with a machine parked on the apron
  • More experienced modelers used to working with resin

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a helicopter model - the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate 3D-printed accessory - the M230 gun - intended for a plastic model of the AH-64 Apache in 1:35 that you already own. Neither the helicopter nor any other parts of it are in the box.

The mechanism of the gun is driven not by the energy of the shot but by an electric motor through a chain. That makes the weapon very resistant to jamming and lets its rate of fire be regulated. On a model it shows in the characteristic shape of the weapon body and the mount.

It is shaped for the AH-64 kit in 1:35 scale from Meng, in the variant with the gun in the parked position. With kits from other manufacturers expect some fitting.

Super glue or epoxy - cement for polystyrene does not dissolve resin, so it will not hold. Wash the parts beforehand and glue the barrel on at the end of the build so that it does not break.
