M40A1 recoilless rifle and TOW anti-tank missile 1:35 — AFV Club

An add-on set of American anti-tank weapons in 1:35 scale from AFV Club. It is not a vehicle model but a weapon set to be fitted onto a vehicle or into a diorama. It holds the M40A1 recoilless rifle of 106 mm caliber and the launcher system of the TOW anti-tank guided missile in the A1 version.

The real subject

The M40A1 recoilless rifle was an American anti-tank weapon of the postwar period. Part of the propellant gases escaped to the rear, so the weapon needed no heavy recoil mechanism and could be seated on light mountings — most often on an off-road vehicle or on a tripod. Its drawback was the conspicuous cloud of dust behind the weapon, which gave the position away. The TOW anti-tank missile was its successor: a wire-guided missile with which the gunner only holds the target in the sight. Both weapons were used on the same vehicles, only in different periods.

Usage tips

• Paint the weapon separately and fit it onto the finished vehicle at the end
• Drill out the muzzle of the recoilless rifle if it is not open
• Glue the small parts of the tripod with a thin cement right on the sprue
• Set the metal barrel apart from the painted parts of the mounting

Who the set is for

For modelers of American postwar equipment in 1:35 scale whose kit lacks the weapon or has it simplified, and for diorama builders. Given that the set covers two different weapons from different periods, two scenes can be equipped from it.
