This shaped base from the Royal Model line gives finished work a frame. It is intended for 1:35 scale and serves as the foundation for a smaller scene, a single figure or a vehicle on its own.
Extensive dioramas tell a story with several participants, whereas a vignette built on a plinth has a single theme and a single viewpoint. The limited surface is an advantage: it does not push you into building a whole street and it lets you concentrate on the quality of one subject. Collectors also appreciate that work treated this way is easy to carry, to store and to photograph, because it has a fixed orientation and a fixed background. At exhibitions a vignette is often the best way to show a carefully painted figure.
Apply the terrain compounds in small doses and let them dry thoroughly, otherwise the surface will warp. Make the transition between the terrain and the edge of the plinth sharp, not smudged; a clean edge is the mark of work well done. At the end, consider a matte overcoat on the whole top surface, which unifies the sheen of the various compounds and stops the scene looking glued together. Check the lower edge of the plinth on a flat board, so that the finished vignette does not wobble.
