Craftsmen give a diorama the calm and the human dimension that a military scene needs for contrast. The blacksmith figure is made in polyurethane resin and in the larger scale it offers room for proper work with paint. The sculpted master was created by Roberto Reale; the box comes without paints and without a base.
A smithy stood in every larger village and by no means served shoeing alone: gate hinges, plowshares, wheel rims and small furniture fittings were all made there. With the arrival of tractors and pressed parts the craft receded, but during the Second World War smithies came in useful again wherever a cart had to be mended or a makeshift part beaten out. In a scene a figure like this therefore suggests itself beside a harnessed wagon, by a pile of scrap and at the open doors of a workshop.
The resin has to be freed of grease before painting; a warm bath with dish soap and a soft brush will do. Remove the remains of the gates with a file and fill any bubbles with modeling putty. The face and hands deserve a separate procedure with gradual lightening, and the leather apron looks good with a dark glaze and a gentle sheen on the edges. Do not be sparing with soot and scale on the clothing, they belong in a smithy.
