About product

BM-8-24 self-propelled rocket launcher in 1:35 scale from MiniArt

Injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet BM-8-24 self-propelled rocket launcher in 1:35 scale from the Ukrainian company MiniArt. This is the full-interior version, so the box holds a detailed driver's compartment and an engine bay with the GAZ-202 engine. Photo-etched parts, clear parts, two rocket crates and a decal sheet are included as well. The hatches can be closed or posed open, so the work done on the interior can really be shown.

The real subject

The BM-8-24 was a Soviet small-caliber self-propelled rocket launcher developed in the fall of 1941. It was created by converting the chassis of a light tank, with a launch rail assembly carrying twenty-four guide rails for 82 mm rockets fitted in place of the turret. Compared with truck-mounted rocket launchers, the tracked chassis had the advantage in cross-country mobility and in durability, and the crew consisted of two men. The vehicle thus combined the firepower of a rocket salvo with the mobility of a light tracked vehicle.

Building and painting tips

This is one of the more demanding kits. Finish and paint the running gear and the interior before you close the hull, because afterwards there is no way back inside. The tracks are made up of individual track links, assembling them calls for patience, and it pays to glue them in longer runs on a flat surface and shape the sag while the glue is still soft. Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface. When painting, keep the interior lighter than reality would suggest, otherwise it disappears in the shadow of the hull. Weathering pigments and mud effects on the running gear suit the exterior, and the guide rails themselves tend to be scuffed and sooty from the rocket motors.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers who want a model with a full interior and are not put off by individual track links.
  • Collectors of Soviet Second World War equipment and rocket launcher systems.
  • Modelers who like to build with the hatches open and show the inside of the vehicle.
  • Builders of Eastern Front dioramas.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The kit includes a detailed driver's compartment and an engine bay with the GAZ-202 engine, so the model can be built with the hatches open.

Probably not. The high level of detail, the photo-etched parts and the tracks made from individual links make this a build for more experienced modelers.

82 mm rockets; the launcher carried twenty-four guide rails.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints and glue are bought separately.
