About product

Matilda I, Infantry Tank Mk. I (A11), 1:35, Gecko Models

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British A11 infantry tank in 1:35 scale. The set was released in 2025 as a new mold and, besides the plastic sprues, it contains photo-etched parts, a decal sheet and one figure of a tank crewman of the early part of the war. The inside of the turret and the driver's compartment are modeled as well, so it can be built with the hatches open.

The real subject

The Matilda I was the first British infantry tank, designed at the end of the 1930s to a requirement for a machine that was cheap to produce, heavily armored and able to accompany infantry. There was room in it for a crew of only two: the commander operated the turret with its single machine gun and the driver sat in the narrow front of the hull. The armor was exceptional for its time, but the power came from a production automotive V8, so the tank moved at the pace of a walking infantryman. In the battle of France in 1940 the Matilda I took part in the counterattack at Arras, where its armor withstood the ordinary German anti-tank guns.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the fighting compartment before you close the hull. Bend the photo-etched parts over a metal edge and glue them with super glue. The early British camouflage takes strong edge highlighting and shading of the recesses, and earthy pigments on the running gear then give the model its sense of scale.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British vehicles of the early Second World War.
  • Modelers with experience of photo-etched parts and interiors.
  • Builders of dioramas of the fighting in France in 1940.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
