In the Second World War the British army used a whole family of light cross-country and utility vehicles that formed the link between staffs, reconnaissance units and combat formations. These vehicles were built on chassis derived from civilian designs, had a low weight and a simple structure and were easy to maintain in the field. In the signals version they carried radio sets and their operators, while in the reconnaissance role they served to move observers quickly and to pass on reports. Light vehicles of this type are a rewarding subject for a diorama, because they add a more civilian scale alongside the heavy vehicles.
Work from the chassis and the running gear, which are hard to finish on small vehicles once the body is closed. Paint and weather the interior and the instrument panel before you fit the roof or the tarpaulin. Use liquid cement for plastic on the joints, which is drawn into the gap and does not clog the fine surface detail. Apply a primer before painting and only then spray the base shade with an airbrush. With British vehicles it pays to work with lightening of the upper surfaces and a darker wash in the panel grooves and around the rivets. Paint the figures separately from the vehicle and place them only at the end, once the matte coat has dried. Finish the dust and mud on the chassis and the fenders with pigments.
