Pre-colored bricks for 1:35 dioramas

A wall built from individual bricks is recognizable at a glance, and so is a wall engraved into a sheet. This set offers bricks in 1:35 scale for building masonry, rubble and the damaged corners of buildings. The product being colored means the bricks are not in a neutral material shade but tinted, so they can be used quickly even without full painting. It is not a model of a building and not a kit, but the material from which you build a scene.

Bond and building the masonry

The credibility of masonry rests on the bond: bricks in adjacent courses have to be offset by roughly half a length so that the vertical joints do not line up. Corners are interlocked alternately, otherwise the corner looks stuck on. For collapsed masonry, create an irregular edge with pieces sticking out and a few bricks hanging over the rim; the rubble spilled below the wall should contain whole bricks as well as fragments.

Unifying and weathering

• Treat pre-colored bricks as a base rather than a finished result; the surface only begins to read as one wall once it has been unified.
• A thin filter passes over the whole area and pulls the differences between pieces together without suppressing their own tone.
• Mortar is made by flooding a light material into the joints and drawing off the excess, not by drawing lines with a brush.
• Repaint a few individual bricks at random in a darker and a lighter tone; real masonry is never uniform.
• Deposits and damp belong at the foot of the wall and where water would run down, not evenly over the whole surface.

The material is intended to be built and finished by the modeler. Glue, joint filler and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
