The 1:35 Fuel barrels set from the Italian brand Royal Model adds large-capacity fuel drums to a diorama: the equipment of a field depot, not a vehicle model.
Responsibility details are not available.
Steel drums for gasoline and diesel were part of the equipment of every field fuel depot. The Italian Royal Model has worked them up as an accessory for 1:35 scale, that is as a prop for a scene, not as a vehicle model.
A large steel drum weighed over two hundred and fifty kilograms when full, so it was never carried. It was rolled on its hoops, tipped over the edge of a cargo bed and lowered down planks propped against the side. That is exactly why the drums tended to have scuffed hoops, dented shells and battered surroundings of the bung openings, and these marks are what turn a casting into a credible prop. Fuel was pumped out of them with a hand pump or poured into smaller containers; the drum itself did not belong to the vehicle, it belonged to the supply chain behind the front.
Drums seldom matched the color of the vehicles. They tended to be painted plainly, with stenciled lettering and sometimes with a colored stripe according to the type of content. It pays to paint each one differently and to grade the degree of wear: one almost new, another with the paint soaked through around the closure, a third rusted down to bare metal. Mix the rust from several tones, never from a single orange.
The accessories are supplied unpainted; paints and glue are not included in the package.
