A plastic kit of the twin anti-aircraft gun mount 3.7 cm Flak 43 Zwilling from Trumpeter in 1:35 scale. The model captures the coupled mount with two automatic guns of 37 mm caliber, including the folding outriggers, the crew seats and the laying mechanism. It is an artillery weapon without a carriage, suitable as the centerpiece of a smaller diorama as well. The kit is meant to be glued and painted.
The Flak 43 was a German single-barrel anti-aircraft gun of 3.7 cm caliber introduced during the Second World War. The Zwilling version carried two of these guns one above the other on a single mount, which markedly raised the rate of fire against low-flying targets. The assembly was heavy and fairly tall, however, so it suited fixed or semi-fixed positions better. Series production got fully under way in 1944 and over seven thousand of these weapons were built by the end of the war. They were used in ground air defense as well as on improvised platforms on vehicles and railway cars, where they protected columns and stations from air attack.
Thin cement for plastic and careful cleaning up of the small parts of the mount and the barrels are the way to go. Lay down a base coat (primer) before spraying and then work with an airbrush — on German equipment a dark yellow base with camouflage patches suggests itself. It is practical to paint the small crew and sight parts while they are still on the sprue. You create the weathering with a dark wash into the recesses and with pigments for dust and rust effects on the mount and the ammunition boxes.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
