About product

When the leather ran out

The German infantryman set off to war in boots with a tall shaft, but a disproportionate amount of leather went into every pair. From the beginning of the 1940s, therefore, the change was made to a low laced boot completed by a canvas gaiter with leather straps, which protected the ankle and the calf in much the same way but used a fraction of the material. The soldiers took to it reluctantly, but by the end of the war it had become a more common solution than the original tall boot.

The detail that dates a figure

For a modeler it is one of the few visible elements that can be read on a figure literally like a calendar. Gaiters on the legs mean the late war, roughly from 1943 onward, while a tall boot points to the campaigns of the first years. When this difference does not fit the scene, even people who know nothing about uniforms will notice it – the result will simply strike them as odd without their being able to say why.

The trouser legs have to agree

When changing the legs it is easy to forget the trousers. Into a tall boot the trouser leg was tucked inside, whereas above a gaiter it gathered into a fold and ended just above its rim. When a smoothly tucked trouser leg is left on the figure and a gaiter is added below, it looks as if the soldier had put on somebody else's legs. A moment's work with putty puts that right; a couple of folds suggested is enough.

Changing the legs in practice

The set contains several stances, so you choose the one for the figure that matches its center of gravity. The original legs are cut off above the ankle, the cut is leveled with a file and the new part is fitted onto a short pin of wire; glue alone would not hold the joint. Degrease the parts before painting. A gaiter has a more matte surface than leather, and it is precisely that difference in sheen that makes the greatest impression on a finished figure.

FAQ

Because of the consumption of leather. A low laced boot with a canvas gaiter protected the leg in much the same way, but far less material went into it.

The change began at the start of the 1940s and in the second half of the war gaiters already predominated. On a figure they therefore date the scene to roughly 1943 and later.

Cut the original legs off above the ankle, level the cut with a file and reinforce the joint with a short pin of wire. Glue alone will not hold such a load.

There are several, so that the one matching the distribution of its weight can be chosen for each figure. The exact number differs according to the package.
