A set of masks for the glazing frames of the Heinkel He 111 H-6 bomber in 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Heinkel He 111 is among the aircraft on which the glazing forms not just the cockpit but the whole front of the fuselage. The asymmetrical glazed nose with the pilot's offset position, the side windows, the gunner's station on top and the ventral gondola under the fuselage together give dozens of panes separated by narrow frames, which also meet at irregular angles. Anyone who has ever tried to outline such a frame with a brush knows why finished models of this type are often recognized precisely by their runny frames.
A cut mask fits the shape of a pane and keeps a frame the same width along its whole length, including the places where two planes of glazing meet at a sharp angle. What it cannot do, though, is save a badly fitted piece of glazing: if a clear part does not sit flush in the fuselage, it will be even more visible once sprayed, because a crisp frame draws attention to it. The order of work is therefore clear - first seat and fine-tune the glazing, then mask.
In 1:35 scale this bomber has a wingspan of around sixty-five centimeters. A model of that size is built differently from a small fighter: the parts are heavy, the joints bear a load and masking the glazing is an hour of concentrated work, not a five-minute matter before spraying. The result, though, is impossible to miss, because the glazed nose is the first thing a viewer's eye goes up to.
Before removing a mask, let the paint become tacky but not cure completely, and peel the mask off with tweezers at a shallow angle. Any buildup on the edge of a frame can be pared away with the tip of a scalpel once dry, without the pane underneath suffering.
