Stowage for the M-10 in 1:35 scale

A stowage set shaped for the M-10 vehicle in 1:35 scale, that is for the American tank destroyer of the Second World War period. It completes the model with the equipment the crews carried with them and which turns a clean kit into a machine in the field.

What the stowage does to a model

A combat vehicle was at the same time a home for its crew. Everything that would not fit inside was piled on the hull, the fenders and the rear deck, and it is exactly this accumulation that gives a finished model scale and a story. Without it the machine looks like a sample from the factory; with it you see at once that it is going somewhere and that somebody lives in it. Stowage also breaks up the large empty areas of armor on which every imperfection of the surface is otherwise visible.

Building and painting

• The parts are not polystyrene and are joined with cyanoacrylate glue; cement for polystyrene has no effect on them.
• Before painting, wash them in soapy water and let them dry thoroughly.
• Cut the excess material and the traces of manufacture off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the surface.
• Lay the arrangement out dry first and photograph it; a symmetrically stacked load looks artificial, while a random but stable arrangement looks natural.
• The load belongs where it would not fall off the vehicle and where it is not in the way: against the hull sides, in the corners and at the edges of the platforms.
• Paint piece by piece away from the model, each one a different shade, so that canvas, wood and metal do not merge into a single color.
• Add the straps and ropes from thin wire or thread; only then does the load really look tied down.
• Do not cover the hatches and the parts you want to be seen; the load is meant to complete the model, not to swallow it.
