A set of photo-etched parts for a model of the American self-propelled howitzer M109A2 of 155 mm caliber in 1:35 scale. According to the name it is built for the Tamiya kit, which with photo-etch is essential: the shaping of the parts follows from a particular kit and on another one they may not meet.
Photo-etch is made from thin metal sheet, and it therefore manages thicknesses that injected plastic cannot offer. It is most visible on the parts that in reality should be of thin material: grilles, eyes, clips, brackets, the sharp edges of covers. A plastic part is necessarily thicker in those places and a modeler recognizes it even without measuring, because the edge casts too wide a trace of shadow.
Separate the parts from the sheet on a hard surface with a sharp blade, not by twisting, or the edge will tear. Level the remainder of the fret tab with a fine file. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two straight jaws, always bend against the marked groove and press the sheet along the whole length of the edge, not at a single point. Degrease the metal before gluing, best with alcohol, and use cyanoacrylate glue. Paint holds badly on bare sheet, so apply an adhesion primer and only then the covering shade. Thin parts of a part set aside are easily tangled, so keep the sheet in a closed box and cut them out only at the moment of assembly.
The set is intended as an accessory to a kit. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
