About product

PACV SK-5 1:35: the American patrol hovercraft (Gecko Models)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale from Gecko Models, which specializes in unusual military equipment of a kind you will not find elsewhere. Note that the PACV is not a boat: it is a hovercraft, that is an amphibious vehicle on an air cushion. The kit offers clear parts for the windows and vision ports, resin stretchers for the interior, only a small amount of photo-etch and several color marking options. On the roof of the cabin there is a turret with a pair of .50 caliber heavy machine guns, the cabin doors can be built raised and a short ramp allows a landing party to disembark.

The real subject

The PACV (Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle), also known as the SK-5, was the American licensed version of a British hovercraft, built by Bell Aerosystems. Only six were built, three for the navy and three for the army, and from the mid-1960s they reached Vietnam, the Mekong Delta. There they were in their element: they ran over water, over mud and across flooded rice paddies, that is where neither a boat nor a wheeled or tracked vehicle could go. They could manage over 100 km/h and in terrain where everything else got stuck they were practically unstoppable. At the same time they were extremely noisy, conspicuous, demanding to maintain and vulnerable to mines, and yet they left behind the reputation of one of the most bizarre and most effective machines of the Vietnam War.

Building and painting tips

The 1:35 scale is the scale of ground vehicles and figures, and that is exactly the greatest strength of this kit: the PACV can be set beautifully into a diorama with soldiers, water, reeds and mud. The skirt of the hovercraft forms large smooth areas, so take care over filling the joints. Finish and paint the cabin and the interior before you close up the hull. Mask the clear parts before spraying. When painting, play on contrast: the upper surfaces bleached by the sun, the bottom of the skirt clogged with mud; use washes and pigments. The water in a diorama can be made from resin or modeling gel and completed with churned-up spray behind the stern.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers looking for a really unusual subject from the Vietnam War
  • For diorama builders: 1:35 combines with figures and accessories
  • For collectors of amphibious and experimental military equipment
  • For anyone who has had enough of yet another tank in the row

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Neither entirely precisely. The PACV is a hovercraft: it moves on an air cushion and copes with water, mud and dry land. For building and for a diorama it behaves more like an amphibious vehicle.

It served for patrolling and for quick raids in the Mekong Delta, where an ordinary boat or vehicle could not make headway; it could cross shallows, mud and flooded rice paddies.

Yes, and that is its greatest strength. The 1:35 scale is the standard for ground vehicles and figures, so the PACV can be completed with soldiers, vegetation and water.

Whether the package holds figures is not stated here. What is certain is the clear parts, the resin stretchers, a small amount of photo-etch and several marking options.
