This is a scenic accessory intended for building dioramas, not a model of a vehicle. The base represents a flat section of paved street in 1:35 scale and has a rectangular plan measuring approximately 31 × 21 cm. The elongated shape is practical for scenes where something is happening along a street, that is for a vehicle in motion, a column of figures or for a model placed diagonally across the area.
The most laborious part of a diorama tends to be the ground. Scribing paving into a compound piece by piece takes hours and the result is hard to unify. A finished section of street does away with this work and gives the scene a flat and stable base. The rectangular format can be combined with further sections into a longer scene, or it can be shortened or complemented with a sidewalk, a wall and further features of the same scale. It suits military and civilian subjects alike, because a paved street by itself does not determine the period.
Clean the base before painting and let it dry, then apply primer. Paving looks alive when the individual stones differ slightly in tone, so after the base coat work with two or three close shades applied irregularly. A dark wash runs into the joints and divides the area, and dry brushing draws out the worn tops of the stones. Suggest traces of traffic with a darker strip in the wheel track and lighter dust at the edges. If you combine the base with another section, mask the joint between them with filler and rescribing, otherwise a straight line gives the transition away.
