A laser cut wooden set of minefield warning signs in 1:35 scale. The parts are broken out of the sheet, sanded and painted, and the boards then mark out a dangerous strip of ground in a diorama.
Responsibility details are not available.
Engineers marked out a mined strip of ground simply: a stake driven into the earth with a plank or a sheet metal board on it bearing lettering and a skull. The marking stood beside roads, at the edges of fields and around abandoned positions, and in a model scene it fills a particular task. It does not fill an area but says where one may not go, and in doing so it gives a scene a story.
The set is entirely wooden and laser cut, which changes the whole procedure. The parts are held in the sheet by a few small tabs, and breaking them out with the fingers does not pay, because thin veneer cracks along the grain. Cut the tab with a new blade held square to the surface and only then take the part out.
The laser leaves a dark scorched strip and fine fibers on the edges. Abrasive paper of medium grit laid on a flat board will take both off, with the part drawn over the surface rather than the other way round. The stakes are sharpened with one or two strokes; an exaggerated point looks unreal at this scale.
Wood absorbs paint unevenly, so direct spraying comes out blotchy. Seal the surface with thinned clear varnish, let it dry through and sand lightly, and only then apply the shade. The lettering is painted with a short-pointed brush, or loose decals from another stock can be used.
The joint between stake and board holds best on PVA wood glue, which fills the porous surface. For driving it into the terrain, drill a hole in the base beforehand, so that it does not snap when pushed in.
