An injection-molded plastic kit of a railroad water crane in 1:35 scale from MiniArt. Note: this is not a model of a vehicle or a locomotive but a scenic and structural accessory, the station equipment with which water was topped up in steam locomotives. It serves as a striking element in railroad as well as military dioramas. Check the actual contents of the box against the manufacturer's part number for this item.
Water cranes were among the indispensable equipment of stations in the era of steam traction. The swiveling arm with its folding hose was turned over the tender of the locomotive and filled its water tank. These installations stood beside the tracks from the end of the 19th century and remained in use until steam locomotives were withdrawn. The model captures the classic European type including small details such as the signal lamps.
Cut the small parts off carefully and glue them with liquid cement for plastic; glue the clear parts with cement for clear parts. The arm can be placed turned over the tracks or swung aside. A metallic look and rust can be supported with a base coat, washes and pigments; water cranes tended to be heavily weathered and rusty, so weathering and traces of running water will give the scene fidelity.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
