A plastic kit of the Soviet wheeled armored personnel carrier BTR-70 in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The box captures the late production form of the vehicle, that is the one met with in units in the 1980s.
The BTR-70 is an amphibious armored personnel carrier with drive to all eight wheels, which followed the older BTR-60PB in the Soviet army. It kept the pair of gasoline engines at the rear and the overall layout of its predecessor, but it received a more powerful drivetrain, a better-shaped hull and better crew protection. In its small turret it carries a 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun with a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. The infantry dismount through side hatches between the second and third axles, which proved a weakness in combat — it was this experience that led to side doors on the later BTR-80. The vehicle can swim, so it crosses water obstacles without preparation. The BTR-70 spread to a number of armies and served for decades.
Glue the axles up on a flat board so the vehicle stands on all eight wheels; fit the wheels only after the hull has been painted, as they are easier to mask that way. Leave the turret able to rotate and sand the barrel of the heavy machine gun carefully to remove the mold seam. Soviet vehicles are painted in protective green, which takes a dark wash into the welds and between the armor plates well. Weather the wheel arches, the sides and the lower areas with dust pigments and leave the upper surfaces lighter so the model does not go black.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
