About product

Sd.Kfz.184 Ferdinand - 1:35, Dragon

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German heavy tank destroyer Sd.Kfz.184 Ferdinand in 1:35 scale from the production of the manufacturer Dragon. The kit captures the original form of the vehicle as it was deployed at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, that is, without the hull machine gun in the front plate and without the commander's cupola, which it received only in the later rebuild. According to the manufacturer the package is completed by photo-etched parts and further details; it is an extensive model for more experienced builders. Check the exact number of parts, the type of tracks and the marking options against the manufacturer's information.

The real subject

The Ferdinand was a German heavy tank destroyer built on the chassis of the unsuccessful Porsche design for the Tiger tank. It carried a long 8.8 cm anti-tank gun in a fixed superstructure at the rear and exceptionally strong frontal armor, so it could destroy enemy tanks at great distances. Only around ninety were built; they were first deployed in numbers at Kursk, where their firepower proved itself but where their vulnerability to infantry, because of the missing machine gun, also showed. After Kursk the surviving machines were rebuilt and renamed Elefant.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off the sprues and bond them with thin cement for plastic; attach the fine photo-etched parts with super glue. Assemble and paint the running gear before closing the hull. Apply a primer and the paints with an airbrush, and after a gloss coat apply the decals. Bring the thick armor to life with a dark wash into the welds and the edges, and create mud and dust effects on the running gear with pigments. The vehicle can be completed with period camouflage of 1943.

FAQ

It is the same vehicle in two phases. The Ferdinand is the original form deployed at Kursk in 1943; after the fighting the surviving machines were rebuilt (a hull machine gun, a commander's cupola and further modifications were added) and in 1944 renamed Elefant. This kit captures the early Ferdinand form.

The original vehicle had no hull machine gun in the front plate, so it defended itself badly against close infantry. Despite the strong armor and the powerful gun that was its weakness, which only the later rebuild into the Elefant removed.

Only around ninety vehicles were built, so it was a very rare type. They were first deployed in numbers at the Battle of Kursk in 1943.
