The base 1:35 Stalingrad base, fifty-five millimeters along the edge, casts a piece of broken factory floor and offers a finished setting for one figure or a small scene.

The Stalingrad subject has a special standing in modeling: nowhere else was there fighting for individual halls, staircases and boiler rooms for so long and at such close quarters. This base, fifty-five millimeters along the edge, captures a section of such a factory floor with rubble and makes it possible to build a vignette with one figure without taking up half a shelf.
From the autumn of 1942 the main weight of the fighting moved into the northern industrial district of the city, where the artillery factory, the steel works and the tractor plant stood. In two of them tanks were still being finished and sent straight into action while the shelling went on. German and Soviet detachments held out there in the same building, sometimes separated by no more than a wall or a machine; for this way of fighting at a range of a few meters the German side coined the term rat war. The fighting ended in February 1943 with the surrender of the encircled army.
The credibility of a surface like this rests on the contrast of finishes. A concrete floor tends to be a cold gray and smooth, brick a warm red to ocher and matte, while steel girders and the remains of machinery hold rust in several tones. A thin layer of ash and dust is then laid over everything, because nothing stayed clean in a burning city. It proves its worth to work from the darkest shade to the lightest and to bring out the broken edges with a dry brush.
It is supplied as a bare casting to be sanded and painted.
